Yes, because of overcoming segragation and slavery. Even though there has not been a black president yet, I think that because every legal citizen in this country has the right to run for president, we are not “perishing from the earth”.

I think we did both. We accomplished Lincoln’s goal because we stopped slavery and segregation and today, everyone is considered equal. But there are still some people who disagree and try to stop the idea of all people being equal.

No i dont think we have accomplished most of these goals, but we did overcome slavery and the people make the decision. The real question is are the people qualified for the votes really the people, or just men. Women haven;t been given equal rights yet so no sense we haven’t achieved all of these goals.

I think that we have accomplished some of Lincoln’s dreams ut, alot not. Like Blacks are still not completly free and alot of fighting is occuring between North and South and Blacks and Whites. We have also fulfilled Lincoln’s dreams because we the North won the war and the South came back as part of the U.S. even though we have had alot of ups and downs the people are still together as a country. I don’t think anyone will fufill all of Lincoln’s and others dreams and ideas because we will never be perfect.

I think that what lincoln means is that the United States Government made by the people is for every USA citizen and that he thinks that every one is equal and that there should be equality for everyone. I think that we have accomplished this. The way that we have accomplished it is by stopping slavery and segregation and giving women more rights. I disagree with Mitch, because he thinks that we won’t have acheived this untill we have a black president. But we have always givin them the right to become a President and hold office. Since everyone as a US citizen is equal today, I think we have acheived Lincoln’s goal.

I do not think we have lived up to Lincolns expectations, we may have gotten rid of slavery and we may have gotten a new/ better goverment then before the Civil War but we still had segregation and until that wonderful day comes, when both african Americans and Americans can live in peace with no segreation. We have not lived up to Lincolns expectations.

I think that we have achieved Lincoln’s goal. There might still be some racism and stuff like that, but our government is the people’s government, because the people pretty much put the government together; our government is run by the people, because the members of our government are citizens and the people of the U.S. get to state their opinion through legislators and the people get to vote whether to let a person take office in the government; the government is run for the people, because the whole purpose of the government is to establish justice and prosperity among the people of the U.S.; and the last time I checked, the country was not breaking apart, so I think that for the time being, because we are such a strong and great country, our government will not perish from the earth, but I did say for the time being, because every great country has its downfall (take Spain for example).

I believe that Lincoln wanted a well rounded country. Lincoln wanted all people to be equal in there own rights. Whether it’s the homeless man that lives in a dumpster around your block or the rich man that drives home in a limo everyday, both two people were created to have the same rights and speak them freely. Lincoln just wants to tell us that no matter what our race is we are still the same in the inside. I think we have accomplished Lincolns goal because look whos running for president this year. We have the first African American and the first lady to be running for office. I think Lincoln would be very proud and happy for what we are accomplishing with-in our country.

I think that we have somewhat accomplished Lincoln’s goal. As Cameron said, African Americans and women can vote-but everyone knows that they’re not going to win. Theres too many racist or sexist people that can’t except that our nation is changing! So in some parts in guess it’s by the people and for the people but the people aren’t always fair.

I think that Lincoln’s goal was to forget what happened in the Civil War and try to deal with bringing the South back. I think that we have only partly acomplished Lincoln’s goal. We have relized that frican Americans are equal to us and we let people in from different countries, but I think that Lincoln wanted someting else done. The world would be a lot different today if we didn’t have poor people. Lincoln would make special places for them to live and other things like Freedman’s Bureau. Today, we just ignore most people and are not willing to help them. I think that we have accomplished Lincon’s goal in the government because there are a lot of people that Lincoln would like runningfor president this year. Lincoln’s main goal was to bring the South back, and we did. We are one country once more!

I think that Lincolns idea of people was only white men at that time. Then African American men were allowed to vote. But still women were not allowed to vote. At this time I think we have accomplished the goal because everyone (18 or over) males and females are allowed to vote. The “people” do have a say in our government.

well i believe that we have overcome most of our problems with slavery. I think we have followed Lincoln’s word and that freedom has come a long way between now and Licoln’s time. i also disagree, many people now still treat women and black men as trash. They still believe that women nor african Americans deserve the same rights as white men. Although we have gone through slavery and segregation i still think that our country has come a looong way!!!

I do not think that this so called goverment is exactly what Abraham Lincoln wanted. This is because we really might not have any say in anything at all. I mean look at the popular and electoral voting system. It’s the electoral thing that counts NOT the popular and that is what we as citizens have the right to do. I mean the popular might have influence but you never know. Also if it was run by the people a bunch of presidents would have been removed. I think maybe that even though a president doesn’t do anything wrong, if nobody likes him/her he/her should be removed. Also if you start out trusting a goverment official and vote for him because he is looking at the issues you care about, and he gets into office, and he doesn’t follow his word then what? You’re not running who is in control he is. Finally when Lincoln said a new birth of freedom I didn’t really see that until the cival rights movements in the 1900’s.

I think that we have partly lived up to Lincoln’s goal, because we have a govrnment run by people, for people, and it’s made up of people. I interpreted what Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address saying that all men are created equel, just like what the Declaration of Independence said. Then I think about racism, which makes me think that we haven’t entirely lived up to Lincoln’s goal. I think that the day that all racism has ended, will be the day Lincoln’s goal was fufilled.

I argee with Julia that our nation, our world has come a long way in over a 100 years. We have become stronger and more independent! we have accomplished greater things and we have reached goal unexplainable! we have conqured the world to the lowest point of survival. we have given our nation the independence that we have worked for. But I think that our nation is not a nation until the Government and our fairly President have given our world the right to be free. Let African Americans run for office, let Women run our beloved nation, let humankind live free until the plant dies. They say that our nation is free, free from slavery. but not free from actually freedom. Such as Congress and President, running for office, showing us that the African Americans and Women can run our nation to freedom. Show us we can, Let us be free.

I agree with Julia that our country, freedom and equality has come a long way but many African Americans are still not treated right. It is nothing really bad like not giving them the right to vote but they are still called African AMERICANS. Lincoln saw this and I believe that his ideas will be carried on through time but they are not completley fufilled. After all, ideas can’t be perfect but they can come close.

In a way we have accomplished Lincoln’s goal. We’ve set up a government where the people have a say so in who is our leader and in what moves we are going to take. Now, everyone is free. Every citizen of the United States has the right to vote and therefor has a say-so in how this nation is run (if you’re of age). The one thing that I think we are doing that is not allowing Lincoln’s dream to be fully fafilled is not allowing people from other countries run for president. I understand that congress doesn’t want a terrorist becoming president, but if you were born in another country and your family came to America when you were two or three I think you should have the right to run for president. Freedom is equal rights for everyone. Is taking the right to run for president from people who came to America when they were young and had no choice but to come to America really fair?

I believe that we partly archived Lincoln’s goal. What Lincoln wants is a little like a utopia which there will never be. There is still racism going on in the U.S. and there will probably always be. We really have no control over that issue. I don’t understand what the boys at the begging were talking about when the boys said there hasn’t been an African American president. It is because there hasn’t been an African American who the people have thought was amazing other wise he or she would be in office. The majority of people in U.S. are not raciest. I believe we have achieved his goal but we could do better.

Sort of. I don’t know about you, but it sure dosen’t look like we are in the middle of a civil war, does it? The United States is not broken like it was for so many years. However the United States still is not equal. White men are still looked at as better that everyone else. Although we are not segragated anymore and people are not violent towards African-Americans, we still steryoptpe people of different genders and races. There has never been a presidet who is not a white man. I don’t thind that we realize it, but we still look towards white men a little bit for help. However, this is not raceisim.

I think that we have and we haven’t. There is no women or African American President, but people are allowing them to vote. Some people worked hard to acheive Lincoln’s goal and some don’t put in effort. People like Martin Luther King Jr. have changed Lincoln’s goal, but people like James Earl Ray who killed Martin Luther King Jr. don’t help at all. If John Wilkes Booth failed to kill Lincoln, he might have succeeded his goal. We’ll never know for sure, but we can do something about it. Helping others, not killing others, not judging people by the way we look. If we try, maybe we can fully succeed Lincoln’s goal.

I beleive that we have not quite succeded in truly being united without racism and being equal, but we have come a long way, for example, in 1866, did women have the right to vote? No! #1. I sooooooo disagre with Mitch’s comment. Saying we need a black president to achive the goal is like saying we need at least one black teacher to get a good education. We just need good leaders PERIOD. Having a black president would be a change, but it has nothing to do with accomplishing the goal. It would be fine if we went until the Tribulation without a black president.
#2. I think we are close to achiving the goal. We have a fair government that includes all U.S. citizens. We have long before gotten rid of slavery and EVERYONE can vote that is 18 or older. We are together and at peace with each other. But there are a few spots like the Ku Klux Klan, other white racists, and black racists ( do they have a name? ). Plus we are at war, and I don’t think blowing people’s heads off was part of Lincoln’s peace plan. We are almost there.

Most of Lincoln’s plan has been carried out, but I still believe that our government is not 100% for the people because some people aren’t represented or maybe don’t do as well as they they would hope to.
I am talking mainly about minorities.
After so many years, minorities still aren’t represented in government, buisnesses, or other areas of leadership like they should be.
All though, we do have a lot of more rights for women, and African Americans, we could do a little more for those who want to come to America for more rights.

I agree with many on this subject, I think that our country has come a long way since the first human beings lived on this earth. I think that we have made many mistakes but we have also gained a lot of knowledge, and made good choices. We have had many leaders that have helped us get to were we are now, and I think that we must keep going and keep our heads high to accomplish what Lincoln said, even though this country can never be perfect. We still need to strive to be perfect.

WOW! you guys can write some long comments! I think that we have acheived this goal, but we also have a long way to go. Yes, Lincoln did sent blacks free, but how did some really think of that? I bet that many southerners hated the fact that the blacks were free. Some people still hate the fact that blacks have the same rights as we do. Even women! i think that there might be some men out there who do not like that women have equal rights. Yes, we do have equal rights, but we want other people to apreciate those rights and treat other people the way that we want to be treated. Just like the golden rule!
