After finishing the web activity use your knowledge of the Manifest Destiny and post a response to the following question:
Explain how you think the North and South are dividing and becoming two very different sections in United States?

September 19th, 2007 at 11:01 am
they were seperated so the number of free/slave states were even, so 1couldnt over power each other. they comporomised with congress.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:02 am
The South is becoming entirely dependent on slaves and wants more state government power. The North, however, doesn’t need slaves and is becoming more concerned about the South leaving.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:03 am
** so one couldnt over power each other!
September 19th, 2007 at 11:04 am
I think the North and South are dividing because the majority of North doesn’t want slavery but the majority of South does. I also think it has to do with the goverment. They just don’t believe in the same things.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:05 am
They are seperating the north and the south with a 36/30 degree line so that the north would be free and the south could be slave, plus they wanted a equal number of states and they didnt want anyone state to have to much power!
the north believes that all african americans should be free and deserive there own lifestyle but the south completly disagree! the south thinks that the reason that african americans came to this earth was to be slaves and work all theier lives!
September 19th, 2007 at 11:05 am
they did because one they cant take over one another and two thhe slaves are stoping and the south is freaking out about not having slaves and all that stuff.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:06 am
The north and the south are way different. The south was slave states and the north was free states. The south also had different laws than the north. I or a black person/slave would want to live on the north side because its free states because it is to cold and u cannot do cropping!!!!!!!!!
September 19th, 2007 at 11:07 am
I think they are becoming completely different because the south had their own business’ and own laws and the north were almost at war with them. The south wants more power and slavery but the north does not want slavery so its almost like they are completely different countries.
I think that some of the settlers even maybe thought of them as seperate places and have seperate laws.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Nation Wide is at your side
September 19th, 2007 at 11:07 am
They are dividing because the south wants the slaves and the north strongly disagrees. They are constantly trying to get the new states that join the U.S. to come to there side. For awhile the missouri comprimise settled most of it but then we started to have problems again. At the time, it seemed like this problem would never stop!
September 19th, 2007 at 11:08 am
they were becoming different people because they each had different bias(science word) on slavery, because of that they were fighting each other and trying to make the country one. Mainly either lave states or free states.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:08 am
I think the north is dividing from the South because I think they thought that the Africain Americains were like white people. I think the south divided from the nort because they wanted to have slaves to do all of their farming and work.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:08 am
They are dividing by making free and slave states. The states above Missouri are free, and the states below are slave. This is divided by an imaginary line at the south border of Missouri. This is so that it is all even. After one state comes in free, the other comes in slave, and the same way if a slave state comes in.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:09 am
Well I think that the North and South are becoming totally different because that they live on totally different surfaces. The Southerners live on big plantations. The Northerners live in very big cities. The Northerners don’t understand the South’s situation so they criticize it, if the North could experience the Southern’s situation more they would probably be nicer to them. The South doesn’t like the North because they are always criticizing them so they don’t like them that much, and that led to the Civil War.

The south and the North are dividing up and becoming two very different places because. The south is mostly about slaves and the north is not about slaves. North is about Endistrey and making products not about slaves. The south is becoming very bad and having way to many slaves now
September 19th, 2007 at 11:10 am
it makes it all even and fair.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:11 am
I belive that the North and South were seperating because the South needed slaves while the North did not. The North and South were becoming more different every day. The south relied off the slaves to do their work while the North did the work they had to do themselves this shows how different the North and South were. The North were willing to do their own work while the South weren,t even though the South have bigger plantations but that doesn’t excuse their mean and churlish behavier towads African Americans.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:12 am
I think that the South and the North are becoming very different sections in the United States, because the South is very focused slavery. The South is very focused on slaves, because that’s how they make money, their slaves help them produce cotton and things like that. However, the North is focused on other things like we don’t need slaves. I think the Missouri Compromise seprated them a lot, and also it is hard for them to get in touch with eachother. And, there living conditions are different like the weather. So, they live differently which causes them to develp different ideas.

The South started to do things that worked well on the land they lived on and the North started to do things that worked well for them. The Northerners couldn’t farm and the South couldn’t do northern things.

The main reason the two regions began to split was the matter of slavery. The north had no need for it but the south lived off it.

I think they are becoming seperate because the south was living off of slaves and the north didn’t need slaves. The south didn’t care if they seperated but the north wanted to stay a nation.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:46 am
They were different because the South was rural and was more dependent on the slaves. The North had litle farming land and had little need for slaves. There differences led to disagreements between them.

I think they are dividing becaue the south are all slave states and the north states are all free states. They arrgued because one was slave and one was free. the north did not need the slaves because they did not have good land. The south were farmers.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:53 am
The north and south were dividing because they had different view of slavery and other things. The north had growing industries and technology and had very little farming,so they did not need slaves. This made them go against slavery. The south needed slaves because of all the farms and plantations they had, without the slaves they could not farm their crops, which was what they lived on. They had different opinions and each of them were growing in different ways, which is one of the things that led to slavery
September 19th, 2007 at 11:53 am
Because the north was free of slavery and the south was slave states. That is because the south had better soil to grow with then the north so they needed help growing there crops.

they were separated by they slaves because the north and south was against each other. Also the north was a free states and the south were slave states. The south needed more cropping because they had better waether for farming unlike the north which was cold so then they wouldn’t need slaves

Hailey Branch-I think the south and the north were becoming different because The north was free and the South had slavery and i think that pulled them apart because that made them different in a huge way!
September 19th, 2007 at 11:57 am
i think that the north and south are divided because the north of the Missouri Compromise line are free states and the south of the Missouri Compromise line are slave states. they are seperated so both sides are even. one side had the same amount of power as the other.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:57 am
The North and South are becoming different because they had different opinions on whether to be a free or slave state. It ended up with the compromise with congress and most of the south were slave states and most of the North were free states.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:57 am
I think the north and south are dividing and becoming two very different sections in the U.S. because they had the seperation line of the north and south and the south wanted slavery and the north didn’t.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:59 am
They had the Missouri Compromise line to help separate power in the senate.
September 19th, 2007 at 11:59 am
I think they are different from each other because the North States didn’t have any slaves but the south did. It was always warm in the South so they had slaves but it was cold for half of the year in the North so they didn’t need slaves.

I think that the North and South are becoming so different because of their opinions on slavery, that have already been decided. The North is against it and the South is for it. So because of their opinion they have gone different directions like, having different work ideas. The South has slaves working in fields and the North has factories and have people working in them. There are different ways but that is one of them.
September 19th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
They are becoming independent from each other and going in their own direction. I thnk they are doing this so that you won’t always be in a country with all slavery. You can have “one or the other.” So that neither the north, nor the south are exactly the same and so that they have equal amount of power. ;-P ;-P ;-P ;-P ;-P
September 19th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
I think that they divied because the south climate is different in the south so they farm and they use slaves.
September 19th, 2007 at 12:01 pm

Because the south needed slavery and are trying to protect that, while the north has know slavry because they have know use fore it because of the climate and the way the land is. The slaves help with the growing of crops because it is hot . The north want to get rid of slavry. The south is getting worried that the north might get more states and be able to overrule slavry.
September 19th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
The south depended on slaves because of thier year round farming, and the north had steam powere and water powere machines and slaves were no use to them. they were seperating because these different views
September 19th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
I think that the North and South are dividing by the North becoming completely in-dependant on slaves and the North becoming completely dependant on slaves. I think they were becoming separate sections because they each were beginning to think the other should leave and then had a war.

September 19th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
i think so the north and the south wont over power each other, beause it wouldnt be fair if one had more power than he other
September 19th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
I think south needed so much slavery to live that the engined powered machines helped slaves so they didn’t have to work as much and owners so there farming would be quicker. I feel bad for slaves! I wonder who much the machines cost?
September 19th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
I think it is because they were just the opposite. The South wanted slavery, but the north did not.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
I think that the reason that the north and the south were not staying together was because of slavery. to be more clear i am talking about how the South needed slaves for the economy. But the North did not want there to be slaves in the West because they thought it would take away from the white mans labor and they didn’t need it for the economy.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
I think the north and south is dividing by states that need slaves and the states that didn’t need slaves. I think they are becoming different sections in the country because one side had slaves and one side didn’t.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
I think the nation is dividing by their differences because of their different ideas, thoughts, and needs. The South needs slavery to make them money and survive in the Cotton Kingdom. The South thinks slavery is OK because they rely on it. The North doesn’t need slavery because they can’t grow cotton and are beginning to realize that slavery is wrong.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
I think that the North and the South were becoming different because the North was more dependent of immigration and industries, while the South was dependent on cotton, which was dependent on slaves. If the two regions are dependent on different things, than they need and want different things, so they will argue a lot about things in Congress.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
The different ideas about slavery in the North and South split them apart into two different parts of the United States. Their different ideas about slavery and their eagerness to not let the other side have more representation in Congress is slowly terning the North and South into enamies. You either believe in having slavery or you don’t so there aren’t many people who are neutral, or undecided on the matter. The Northerners don’t need slaves, so they don’t believe in it. The Westerners believe that they need it to farm plantations.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
I think the main reason they were seperating was because of slavery and to keep congress balenced
September 19th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
To Not be different in power and to be simalaur in power.
(i know I spelled simalar wrong.)
September 19th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
I think the two nations were becoming very different because they didn’t really talk to each other and they didn’t think much of each other they were trying to do their own thing and not try and work togehther so they gradually drifted apart.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
I think that the North and South are spreading apart because they, like Mac said, are in completely different situations. The South thinks that if they lose slaves, then they will lose their economy. The North doesn’t think they need slaves partly, I’m guessing, because they don’t use them.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
To Not be different and to be simalar in power.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
I think they seperated the free states and the slave states to balance out the power throught america so no type of sate had more power than another state
September 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
reed-the are dividing because one is free and one is slave and they are trying to seperate the two, to balance congress
September 19th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
because the south grew more toward slavery and the north grew farther away from it.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
i think that the missouri comp really messed things up by defining north and south.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
I think the north and south are dividing, because they each have their own opinion. The north does not like slaves and the south does. This is creating conflict between the two.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
The main difference was slavery, but there were others. States writes and the westward expantion played roles in seperating the country. Each section of the country also had different specailtys and resources. The north was indutial and the south was simply agricultural.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
I think the north and the south are totally diferrent. The south is focused on slavery and the north doesn”t care about slavery and thats why they are divided. They have to keep the free and slave states even or one can overule the other and thats not really fair.
September 19th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
because the north wants to be free and the south wants to have slaves and they are dividing so one won’t get over powered
September 19th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
I think that web page he gave us was resourceful. it was interesting too.
September 19th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
The north and south are dividing because the north wants no slaves there or in the west and the south thinks they need slaves. So therefore there was the Missouri Compromise Line that seperated the slave and free states, and because of that, Missouri became a slave state, and Maine became a free state because they wanted to be equal.
September 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm
I think the North and South are dividing because the North does not support slavery and the South needs slaves.
September 19th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
Think the North and South dividing and are becoming to different parts of the country are because one part are slave states and the others are free and I think that they are becoming different parts because they really aren’t communicating because of the differences between what they think about having slaves or not. So, I think that they are becoming different sections of the United States because of the differences.
September 19th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
OOOOOOOPS!!!!!! I put my paragraph in three times!
September 19th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
I think they were splitting because they had two different opinions about slavery. What the northern region thought about slavery was that slavery was bad and the reason they thought that was because they didn’t really need slaves , but the south relied and depended on them!
September 19th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
I also think they were dividing because they didn’t understand each other and didn’t understand why different people in different places needed some of the things they didn’t need. Like the different slavery opinions. (the free&slave states also didn’t want 1 to over rule or over power the other.)
September 19th, 2007 at 7:04 pm
I think the north and south are divided because…. The south wants slaves and the north does not. The south wants slaves because they have a place for farming and the right climate. While the north has mountains and the wrong climate. Therefore the south needs slaves to help with farming. While the north thinks slavery is wrong because they need no slaves. They each want to keep equal amounts of people in the congress. Because if the north has more people, then slaves can be out lawed. But if the south has more, then slaves will stay. So therefore the 36/30-degree line comes in. This keeps it far in congress and everyone happy.
September 19th, 2007 at 7:56 pm
I think they are going two different ways because the south is starting to rely on slaves and cotton and the north is starting to rely on factories and is mostly aginst slavery or just does not need slaves. the fact that the north and south are totally different is becomming a problem not only because they could end up as two different continents but also because it effects the government beccause now we need to balance power in the senate it also effects the mannifest destiny because as we move west we develop more and more states or territory and we now have to decide if it is going to be a free state or slave state. in all north and south are becoming two different territories.
September 19th, 2007 at 8:02 pm

The main reason is slavery. The south’s life practicly depends on it. The north Strongly opposes it. The south thinks that the North dosn’t know how life on a plantation is. The North thinks the south is being terrible and unfair. Frankly, the were. They both had completly different ways of life. Scince the North can’t have plantations or farms, they can’t see why the South needs slaves. The South can’t see why the North can’t see they need slaves. They had vry different aspects of the world.

I believe that since each side is trying to overcome the other, they have not become the united, but the seperated states. They have become rivals and since I cannot descide which side is better, I will say that both of them are right. The North is correct, because slavery is wronge so I see why they are against the south. But also, the south depends on slavery, otherwise their econemy would crash. So I believe that they have a right to despise each other, but not a right to let the U.S. break down into war about it.
September 20th, 2007 at 7:12 am
I think they are dividing not by actualy coming apart but by saying that they do not want to be apart of the nation just like the seven states int eh south decided to come the confederate states.
