Many times people make judgments about others due to the fact they do not understand them, they have never taken the time to talk to them and just believe what others say. Unfortunately, this is why people can hate others without ever having met them. The KKK is an example of people hating others they have never met due to the fact they believe what others have said. It is important to never judge people on the what others tells us, we need to make our own informed decisions on people and get to know their character….because physical appearance has no influence on one’s character as a person.
I want you to listen to a girl who experienced people not knowing her as a person, but made judgments about her due to her race. In this story the people did not hate her, they wanted to find out for themselves what she was like.
In order to listen to her story click:
After learning about Reconstruction and the Jim Crow Laws, why do you think so many people have never seen a girl like her before?

I think that it was because black codes sort of created two worlds. One for white people and one for black people. So they probably didn’t see much of the other race.

These people have never seen a black person before because they don’t bother with black people. They were also different and it was like seeing someone from another planet. It was diffferent for both the little black girl and all of the white people. They were probably scared and didn’t know what to do.

I think that it was because black codes separated the whites and the blacks so they would not see one another.

I think they have never seen a person like her before because blacks and whites have two different worlds. They had to go to different schools and they had to use different water fountains and different restrooms. The two races wouldn’t interact with each other. Not ever. The whites always tried to stay away from the blacks and they would almost make sure they never saw blacks.

I think that so many people had not seen colored people because of black codes and segragation. Segragated towns and areas kept the blacks and whites apart. Some towns would not allow colored people to even walk on parts of the street or try to make them invisible. the people in that town had heard stories and were misslead about black people thinking that they were animal like. i agree with the end of the second comment

I THINK THAT PEOPLE DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE BECAUSE OF SEGREGATION AND BECAUSE THEY CHOSE NOT TO. OBVIOULY FOR SEGREGATION THEY DIDN’T SEE THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE SEGREGATED SO THEY DIDN’T ASSOCIATE WITH EACHOTHER. I ALSO THINK THAT PEOPLE JUST DIDN’T WANT TO GET TO KNOW THESE PEOPLE, JUST BECAUSE THE HAD A DIFFERENT COLOR SKIN AND PEOPLE HAD TOLD THEM THAT THEY WERE NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO GET TO KNOW.

I think the black codes seperated blacks and whites. The blacks and whites seperated each other just like segergation did. The blacks and whites had to use different books, water fountains, bathrooms, etc. If blacks and whites were always seperated, blacks and whites would never see each other.

since the black codes happend whites didn’t really want to see blacks thinking blacks were “lower” the themselves. also since hearing stories (like the girl said) gave whites pictures of completly different people whites thought they would look different, eat different, talk different, and just live a whole other life.

I believe that there was probably not many blacks in Nebraska, as it was far away from the South.

i think that whites probally had never seen a girl like the one on the blog, because when the black codes were established many people did not have blacks working for them and croping for them so they had never really seen one before.
